Title: 1972-01-30 (Side B)

(00:16:54 minutes)

End January

Mom is solo. She talks about whether the audio recording is okay or not and about cassette tapes. She tells Grandma and Grandpa that she's going to go shopping at the Liberty House that afternoon to buy yarn since Mary's going to a birthday party, Richard is at catechism, and Joe and John are going to the movies. She tells them about a coffee she went to last night with some of the wives from the Sea Dragon and how Dad still doesn't know where he's going to be sent next. The orders are crummy and the Navy isn't doing a very good job about giving enough advance notice. She talks a bit about Ilene(?) and how Kanaka likes to chew fuzzy slippers and hair brushes. She also talks about how the boys are growing their hair longer while Dad is away at sea and that he will likely not like it. She ends by saying that she hasn't heard from Grandma and Grandpa Dobes lately, but she heard Grandpa Dobes has arthritis in his knees.

End January

John starts by describing the Hawaiian Rainbows basketball game the night before, his report card, and what he wants for his birthday (racing stuff including racing car helmet and dragster poster). Richard is next, telling Grandma and Grandpa about how he's beating Joe and John in hockey, his report card, going to the Pagoda Restaurant while Grandma and Grandpa Dobes were visiting, Kanaka, and how the Dallas Cowboys won the Superbowl. Mary goes into detail about what she wants for her birthday, including a bunny costume, coveralls, and a camping truck for Barbie. She also talks about going to a birthday party that afternoon and then who the kids in her class are. Joe tells Grandma and Grandpa about a babysitting class he went to (he had to put diapers on a baby doll), his report card, and playing baseball.

(00:08:36)

Early January

Mom continues about the flooding. She says that the kids are complaining that they have nothing to do even though there are closets filled with toys. They all baked some cookies and Mom's been going to class to get John ready for his First Communion, which will happen before Dad comes home. Tells them that Joe's going to take a babysitting class and that the kids are busy with field trips and birthday parties. The time is going fast but she's ready to leave Hawaii - the house is getting on her nerves because everything is white and it has limited space. Ends by telling them that she's going to buy Mary and John bikes for their birthdays.

(00:08:35 minutes)

Early January

Mom is solo. She talks about replacing the audio player with a cassette player because it's becoming more difficult to find audio tapes. She says that she'll write to Dad about it. She hasn't heard from Dad in a couple of weeks so she doesn't know where he is right now. Auntie Honey gave the kids money for Christmas and Mom sent her a bouquet of flowers but hasn't heard whether she got it or not and asked Grandma and Grandpa if they would mind checking. Also had flooding in the house and several rugs were ruined. She was going to have the rugs cleaned and then file a claim with the Navy.

Title: 1971-09 (Side B)

(00:17:03 minutes)

Opens with Mom joking with Joe about Christmas presents. Richard breaks in saying that he broke the bathtub. Mom then tells Grandma and Grandpa that she and Dad have a good excuse for not sending the tape - it's been a crazy month with Dad standing watch every 3 days. Mom has been sewing clothes for Mary for both school and playtime and then says Dad will be gone for most of the week since he's going out to sea. They still don't know when the family will be leaving Hawaii or where we'll be stationed. Dad talks about work, golfing, swimming and then talks about Kanaka and how he's unlike any other dog we've had. Mom and Dad have hosted a couple of parties and Dad reupholstered Mom's rocking chair. Mom then talks about Dad leaving for the 6 month cruise and what she'll do during that time including taking a quilting class and learning Bridge. They went to see "Big Jake" and Dad says that the car has almost reached 100,000 miles. They also bought a new dryer.

He was watching a football game and announces that it's time for him to take his bath. John reads a book from class and talks about his different teachers.
