(00:30:28 minutes)

Kids talk in varying order. Richard talks about his birthday coming up, about the mover's coming to pack up their stuff (it's complicated but Mother has it all figured out), how he's not looking forward to sleeping on Navy beds, and the ranking of various football teams. Also talks about his favorite tape "The Jungle Book" and quotes the dialogue and sings a song from it. John talks a lot in the background and then tells story about moving and navy furniture. Mary tells Grandma and Grandpa that she just got her ears pierced (and it hurt a lot!) and having 2 teeth pulled. Also tells them that she's catching a cold, how Mom's making a lot of clothes for them, and what she's going to do when she sees the snow. Joe talks about what we're going to do when we come to Chicago and about he and Richard staying with Grandma Dobes. Kids sing "Yellow Submarine" and "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing".

Title: 1972-11 (Side A)

(00:30:28 minutes)

Mom and Dad speaking primarily about moving from Hawaii to New London CT. House has been packed up and they wanted to travel by ship but instead will be taking a direct flight from Honolulu to Chicago and will be arriving on December 16th. The dog will be travelling with the family as part of the luggage and then they debate about what exact time the family will be arriving in Chicago. The rest of the tape is spent discussing temporarily putting the kids in school while Mom and Dad look for a house, what kind of dog food Kanaka likes, putting snow tires on the car, and what plans they have the first week they're in Chicago. Dad also mentions that he wants potato bread and hot veal loaf. End the tape by telling Grandma and Grandpa that Dad is going out to sea for a week and that Mom will be stuck cleaning the house up.

(00:30:28 minutes)

Grandpa continues with story about the trouble they're having with window wells and giving advice about supervising the move. Switches over to talking to the kids and how they're looking forward to seeing the kids (it's been 2 1/2 years since they last saw them). Ask about how Kanaka's obedience training is going and Grandma tells them that she will register all the kids with library cards so they will all be able to check books out of the library. Grandma Dobes is looking forward to seeing everyone, they know that we're all studying and we're smart kids. Then switches over talking to Dad asking him how his trip was and how much confidence that they have him in and that they're proud that he's a Lt. Cmdr. at such a young age. Next time he and Pat tape he needs to talk more than Pat! Tells them that Grandma Dobes is doing well and ends with saying again how much they're looking forward to seeing everyone.

(00:30:25 minutes)

Grandma and Grandpa Chocola recording. Grandma talks about how terrible the weather is and how thrilled they are that we're coming to Hinsdale soon. Grandpa wants to know whether we are coming by boat or whether we are flying directly into O'Hare so that they can plan accordingly. Grandma says that they've been busy working on the basement, getting all the veggies in before the first frost and how she started canning. They went to Auntie Alice's brother's 25th wedding anniversary recently and every week or so go to church and then bowling with Auntie Flo and Uncle Tony. Again talks about looking forward to having the family come it and that she and Grandpa will make all the arrangements and that everyone can stay with them. Grandpa tells them that he'll take care of putting snow tires on car and making sure the wagon is winterized. He gives Mom & Dad advice about packing furniture and household items, and then he and Grandma talk about the family (i.e,. Uncle Joe Benak is retiring and building another home) and that everyone is looking forward to see them in December. Grandma talks about how busy they are even though they're retired.

Joe talks about Kanaka taking obedience class and tells Grandma and Grandpa that he wants to leave by ship to the mainland US instead of by plane. Mary talks about what she's learning in school, that she's taking hula lessons, and complains that Joe is talking too loud on the phone. She reads a story from school. Title: 1972-09 (Side B)

(00:30:56 minutes)

Complete and utter chaos. Kids pretty much all talking at once; telling Grandma and Grandpa about watching Olympics, baseball, and what they're doing in school. At points, Kanaka is barking in the background and kids talk individually. Richard asks Grandpa if he can take us to a Chicago Bears game when we come to Chicago and Mary asks Grandma if she can make clothes for Barbie. Kids also play with the recorder by speeding up their voices. Kids end cassette tape by singing "Aloha Oe".
