    00:00

    Produced: January 2018

This piece explores the nicknames in the Evans family, many of whom live in and around Oxford, North Carolina. The story attempts to answer the questions: How does one get a nick name? Why do some people identify with their nicknames while others don’t? Does a nickname define who we are?

  • The Triangle Seagals

    00:00

    Produced: July 2016

In the summer of 2014, I was glancing in the Cary News and I came across an ad for the Triangle Seagals, a local unit of WAVES National. I dialed the number listed in the ad, and the voice on the other end was Norma Schrader, the chapter president at the time. Norma introduced me to some of the Seagals at their next meeting and the story was put into motion. Over the course of several months, I had the chance to speak with ten ladies in the Seagals and asked them questions ranging from why they joined the Navy to why this group is important to them. I also spoke with Beth Ann Koelch from UNC Greensboro, who has a strong connection to women veterans. This is the story of the Seagals.
